Best & Worst
By Alice L. Haber
Stories of Our Lifetimes
In this series of brief yet intimate remembrances, nonagenarian author Alice L. Haber collects stories of the peaks and valleys experienced by over 30 of her friends and relatives.
Inspired by the famous opening of Charles Dickens’ The Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times,” Haber’s fifth book plumbs events both joyous and sad. “Reflecting on the past certainly can open old wounds,” the author writes. “But as time moves on, we seem to be able to remediate what was once hurtful. It’s always a good thing to “let go” of the events and people that made us sad.”
Likewise, she says, “the joyous occasions that gave us ‘warm fuzzies’ are a constant reminder that life is good, and that we are very thankful for those memories. I hope as you read these accounts it will encourage you to review your life and select your best and worst. Remember, too, you have time to make new and beautiful memories!”
